Ethan Tacheny was not only an amazing boy with an indomitable spirit, a tender heart and quick wit. He was also a model patient, holding still, being brave, and often wanting to assist his nurses as they provided his care.
The Ethan John Morgan Tacheny Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who feels called to serve others, with love and inspiration, in the field of pediatric nursing. Pediatric nursing is not just a medical specialty, but a human specialty. The student who receives this scholarship is someone who understands pediatric patients and families require treatment with an added level of compassion, patience and understanding. The recipient will have exhibited, through their course work and application materials, the personality and skill necessary to care for pediatric patients, and their families, with a sense of comfort and calm in the face of illness and uncertainty.
To be considered for this scholarship students must submit the following:
Transcripts of all coursework completed to date, showing a GPA of at least 2.5 and steady progression towards graduation
An essay explaining why they feel called to serve others through a practice in pediatric nursing
The essay should be approximately 500 words and illustrate who the applicant is as a person, as well as who they hope to be as a pediatric nurse
Sealed recommendations from two Glendale College nursing faculty who can speak to the student’s temperament and ability to gently relate to pediatric patients on their own level
For more than 30 years Barbara Britt dedicated her life to nursing and caring for pediatric cancer patients. Her work has impacted the lives of thousands of patients and their families. She is a revered and beloved member of the pediatric cancer community and played a primary role in the care of Ethan and his family throughout Ethan’s cancer journey.
The Barbara Britt Scholarship is awarded to a student who feels called to serve others, with love and inspiration, in the field of oncology nursing. Oncology nursing is not for the faint of heart. It requires passion and a dedication to patients that reaches well beyond the walls of the hospital or treatment center. The recipient will have exhibited, through their course work and application materials, the temperament and knowledge necessary to care for oncology patients, and their families, with compassion and steadfastness in the face of illness and uncertainty.
